The "I" Word

I heard it again today. "You're such an inspiration!" I know this is not going to sit well with a lot of people, but I HATE when people say that to me. Absolutely hate it.
Why? Two reasons. First, I don't like the idea that people need incentive to do something because of what somebody else does. If you want to do something, just do it. (Sorry, Nike!) And then own it! Don't say I inspired you to lose weight, say you decided to lose weight and by God you did it. I had nothing to do with it.

The other reason is that I find it to be some degree of pressure or responsibility. Okay, so you're watching me. And if I'm successful, it inspires you. But what if I'm not? Does that give you license to say 'screw it, why should I try for myself? I don't want that kind of thing on my shoulders.

What other people do (or do not do) for themselves should be about them, not me.

  1. I agree with you. Still, it must feel rewarding to you that you DO inspire others. It's a sign of your own personal success, and others may want to mimic you because they admire you so greatly. I can understand it may put some pressure on you. But ultimately take it for what it is: recognition that you are doing very well for yourself.

  2. People say that to me too and it is a lot of pressure. I did it for myself, not you or anyone else.

People are being nice and what they need to keep them going might not be what you need. But that is pretty cool to affect others, whether you want it to or not.

It is up to them to take that inspiration and make it work for them. I see it is hard for you to take the compliment but when you put yourself out for the world to read and see, then you will be looked at. It is a powerful thing to be an inspiration, it is what you do with the power that counts, whether you asked for it or not.

  3. Maybe they see you as someone who is taking a risk and pursuing her dreams! :-)
